Simple Actions to Get Started and Become More Productive Using AI


A grounded guide for marketing and sales professionals who want real results, not a technology overhaul.


INTRODUCTION

There is a lot of noise around AI at the moment. Most of it is not particularly useful if you are trying to work out whether any of this is worth your time. This is a more grounded take. AI is genuinely useful for a specific set of tasks. For those tasks, it saves time and reduces friction. This post is about starting simply, building habits that stick, and getting real value without overhauling the way you work.

 

Start With One Problem, Not One Tool

The most common mistake when adopting AI is choosing a tool before identifying the problem. People sign up for something impressive-looking and then wonder what to do with it.

Start with a pain point instead. What takes you longer than it should? What task do you routinely put off? What part of your week feels inefficient? Find one of those. Then ask whether AI can help with it. If the answer is yes, that is where you start.

For most marketing and sales professionals in the experience economy, the answer turns out to be writing. Drafts, summaries, captions, email sequences, press releases. These are tasks where AI removes the blank page problem without removing your judgment.

 

Understand Which Version of Claude You Are Using

If you are starting with Claude, it helps to know that there are three meaningfully different versions. They are not interchangeable.

CLAUDE CHAT

This is the browser interface at claude.ai. You type, Claude responds. It can only see what you paste in. This is the right place to start. No setup required. Free to try, with a paid tier (Claude Pro) that removes usage limits.

CLAUDE COWORK

This is the desktop app. You point it at a folder on your computer and it reads the files inside. It can produce finished documents, save them directly to your machine, and run tasks on repeat without you re-explaining the context each time. You need Claude Pro and the desktop app from claude.ai/download. This is the version for people who want AI to do recurring work, not just answer questions.

CLAUDE CODE

This runs in your computer's terminal. It is the most powerful version. You can point it at data files, run analysis, produce formatted reports, and build repeatable workflows that run automatically. It requires a fifteen-minute setup and a comfort with following instructions. You do not need to be a developer.

WHERE TO START: Start with Chat. Get comfortable. Once you are using it for at least one task every day, consider whether Cowork would save you more time on recurring work. Code comes later, if at all.

 

Learn the Basics of Prompting

The way you communicate with Claude matters considerably. A vague prompt produces a vague result. A specific, well-structured prompt produces something genuinely useful. You do not need to study prompting in depth to get started. A few principles help immediately.

Be specific about what you want and why. Include the context Claude needs to help you. Tell it the format you want the output in. If the first result is not right, refine rather than start again.

A SIMPLE BRIEF TEMPLATE THAT WORKS

I need to [task]. The audience is [who they are]. The objective is [specific outcome]. The tone should be [tone]. The constraint is [word count / channel / deadline]. Please produce [format of output].

That structure alone will produce materially better results than a one-line instruction. The quality of what Claude gives you is almost always a reflection of the quality of what you gave it.

 

Use It for Writing First

Writing is where most professionals find AI most immediately useful. Drafting emails, preparing reports, creating summaries, producing social content. These are tasks where Claude can meaningfully reduce the time spent without reducing the quality of the output.

Start by using it to draft rather than to finalise. You write the rough ideas. Claude helps structure and polish them. Your job shifts from writing to editing, and editing is faster.

GO FURTHER: Ask Claude to explain what it changed and why. That feedback often reveals something about your own writing patterns that is worth knowing.

 

Build a Simple Habit Before Adding Complexity

The professionals who get the most from AI are the ones who use it regularly, not the ones who use it occasionally for big projects. Regular use builds fluency. You get faster at prompting. You learn what works and what does not.

Try using Claude for at least one task per day for a fortnight. It does not have to be significant. Drafting a short email, summarising a document, generating options for a subject line. The habit matters more than the task.

Once the habit is in place, there is a more powerful move available in Cowork. Create a folder called Claude Cowork on your computer with four subfolders: ABOUT ME, PROJECTS, TEMPLATES, and CLAUDE OUTPUTS. In ABOUT ME, create a plain text file that describes who you are, your audience, your brand voice, and one example of writing you are proud of. Point Cowork at that folder. From that point, Claude reads your context before every task. You stop re-explaining yourself every time.

WHY THIS MATTERS: One good context file is worth more than fifty carefully crafted prompts. The output shifts from generic to something that actually sounds like your organization.

 

Protect Your Judgment

Claude produces confident-sounding output. That confidence is not always warranted. Treat AI-generated content the same way you would treat a first draft from a capable junior colleague: useful, but requiring review.

Check facts. Adjust tone. Make sure the content reflects your actual position, not just something plausible. The editorial judgment is yours. Claude is there to reduce the blank page problem, not to replace your expertise.

AI will not make bad strategy good. It will make good strategy faster. That distinction is worth keeping in mind.

 

Do Not Try to Use Everything

There are dozens of AI tools available and new ones appear regularly. Most of them do overlapping things. You do not need to evaluate all of them.

Pick one general-purpose AI assistant and learn it properly before adding anything else. Depth of skill with one tool is more valuable than surface familiarity with ten. Claude is a sensible choice for marketing and sales professionals because it handles long-form writing, editing, research synthesis, and document production in one place.

 

A Good Place to Begin

If you want a single starting point, here it is. Take one document you need to write this week. Give Claude the brief below. Review the output critically. Edit it into something you are happy with.

YOUR FIRST PROMPT

I need to write [type of document] for [audience]. The purpose is [specific objective]. The tone should be [tone]. Key points to include: [list them]. Please produce a first draft of approximately [word count] words.

Note how long that process took compared to writing the document yourself. That gap is your immediate return.

Once you have done it once, you will have a much clearer sense of where AI fits in your work and where it does not. Start there. Build from there. The professionals getting the most from these tools right now are the ones who started with one real task, not a technology strategy.
